No I didn’t start telling time, military style, I just went to lunch at the new gastropub in downtown Torrance, 1321 Downtown Taproom Bistro. I did a preview post months ago when it was just opening & I’ve been eager to try it since. So when I was invited to check it out, I jumped at the chance.
I got there on a busy afternoon. The restaurant was pretty full which was good for business and I took that as a good sign. It was very dark, the furniture reminded me of an English pub, the kind you’d see on tv. The only thing I didn’t agree with about the ambiance was the showing of silent movies on the tvs. Maybe it was supposed to go with the theme but it just downright creeped me out! I would’ve preferred to watch sports or what have you but I digress…
Unfortunately, my meal didn’t start out on the right foot. Put it this way, the girl next to me was literally seated at the same time I was. In the time it took her to get her lunch, I just got my water. I really don’t know what I make of that. I know it was busy but it seemed a little much to wait over 10 mins for a water.
Fortunately my meal arrived in a timely manner.
The MOD burger was just a nice sight to see. The whole knife stabbing thru the middle hearkened back to my Ruby Tuesday days but that’s where the similarities ended. A lot of care went into the prep, I could definitely tell. The meat, juicy, the bacon, crisp and the veggies, crunchy. I liked their homemade chips which were the right amount of crunch and salt without the grease.
I’m glad that the second half of my lunch was better than the first. Maybe I’ll give 1321 another try on their Sunday brunch and hopefully things will be seamless from start to finish. This place does have potential & I’d like to see it succeed in very sleepy downtown Torrance.
