Aussie Eats Part 5: The Vegemite Experience

I said to the man do you speak my language/he just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich…

No trip to Oz would be complete without writing about their ever popular vegemite. The first time I heard that word was ages ago, with my hair still in pigtails & most likely drawing in a coloring book as Men At Work’s “Down Under” played on the radio. Being a toddler I had no idea what they were talking about. I think the first thing that came to mind was a vegetable since that was the first part of the word.

Naturally when I got to Australia, I went on a manhunt for this Australian staple. I was a bit daunted when I saw that there was definitely no travel size, at least at the stores I checked out. I wouldn’t know what to do with the rest of the jar. I more than likely couldn’t take it back home with me either.

I decided to wait for the cruise where everything was of course, free. This way if I didn’t like it, there would be no harm done.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I’d say their vegemite is the equivalent to our butter. Yes I’m sure they use butter too but as for spreads with toast, I think it’s fairly safe to say that this is their go to condiment.

With that being said, I bit the bullet & spread just a bit of this concoction on my breakfast roll. My first reaction was that it tasted similar to a beef bouillon cube. It was salty and beefy. It wasn’t my cup of tea and I ate the rest of my breakfast to get that taste out of my mouth but it lingered for a bit. Now, all the Australians I met were the sweetest people but I wouldn’t be surprised if some of them saw my reaction & chuckled a bit. Maybe I tried it wrong? Not so sure. With some things in life, it’s an acquired taste. Either way, I’m glad I can scratch this one off my bucket list!
