Aussie Eats Part 3: Caminetto Sydney, NSW, Australia

The cool thing about going to a foreign country is seeing what they have to offer. Another thing of course is how they take a different spin on standard favorites. Sydney has a wide selection of Asian & European cuisine. We wanted to see how these meals compare to how we do it back home.

Enter Caminetto, an Italian restaurant located in the oldest part of Sydney, The Rocks. Over here in the states, we say that our Italian food has become Americanized, that they’re very few authentic Italian restaurants. I of course couldn’t say that the food was Americanized… but could I say it was “Aussie-fied”?

I chose the one dish practically everyone back home associates with Italian food, the pizza. Now, this particular one was different. It didn’t have a sense of a cookie cutter standardized by the book feeling to it. What I loved about it was its imperfections. The crust shape was a little bit “wavy” throughout. The toppings were liberally piled on top. For some reason, these little nuances made it seem a little bit more like the real thing than if I ordered some Domino’s to go back in Cali.

Although the taste was great, a mild and well seasoned sauce, gooey cheese & hot pepperoni, the jury is out on whether it was true Italian or something very close to it.

Either way it was one good pizza & I wouldn’t mind trying what else they have on the menu if I head back to Sydney anytime soon!
