Whenever I would make my trip to the gym, or perhaps, to Home Depot like many new homeowners do, I’d pass Hof’s Hut. The name alone sounded like they’d serve stereotypical German food, and beer in steins. The structure looked like a knockoff of IHOP. The dining area always seemed full no matter the time of the day so after a year of driving by, we decided to give it a try.
The minute we walked in, it was clear that this was not a place with stereotypical barmaids serving steins of hefferveisen along with plates of bratwurst. A glimpse of a large bakery case reminded us of a diner we’d frequent when visiting my family in Tampa. As expected, there was a wait. The menu was similar to IHOP & Denny’s so we wondered why it was so popular. This was not a crowd looking to sober up. Not by far, and especially not at 6pm on a Friday night.
After a short wait, we were seated in the outdoor patio area. Quite a few tables were out there consisting mostly of families & two tops. However the servers were running around rather frantically. Not a good sign so early in the evening.
The menu featured a good variety of salads, sandwiches, entrees, and all day breakfast. I learned the restaurant had been around since the 60s with the first location in Long Beach so there were a few signature items that I was eager to try.
Sadly however, the server was slammed and the supervisor came over to take the order. What made it worse was that he didn’t know the menu and I had to point out the item to him. It was another bad sign. At that moment, I prayed that the order would come out correctly.
Thankfully, my dinner came out correctly and thankfully it was a rather large portion too. It tasted pretty good although I could have done with fresher vegetables but I know I wasn’t exactly eating at the most glamorous restaurant either. I was grateful I didn’t order the salad because I would probably feel more disappointed.
After finishing up our dinners, our server was nowhere to be found. It took another 30 minutes to settle our payment and go. I left feeling full & perplexed. The service was sub par, the food was just alright, so I wondered, why is it busy all the time?
Do you have a local diner you like to frequent? Do you wonder why some restaurants are so popular for no reason?
